Outdoor / Exterior Photographs

Lambert Castle is situated inside Garret Mountain Reservation, a public park owned and operated by the County of Passaic. As of June 1, 2018 all commercial photography and gatherings on the grounds of Lambert Castle require a permit from Passaic County. Please contact Kelly Ruffel, Director of Cultural and Historic Affairs at kellyr@passaiccountynj.org. The exterior of Lambert Castle includes all the grounds as well as the building’s exterior features: staircase from the parking lot; plaza and fountain; front and rear porticos; wrap-around walkway of the turret’s exterior; front terrace and stairs; and stone wall with views of the Manhattan skyline.  The park is open 365 days-a-year from sunrise to sunset. Please be advised that changing rooms are not available at Lambert Castle. Lambert Castle is a popular location for wedding, engagement, prom and birthday photographs, so please be aware that your group may not be the only group interested in using our grounds (this is especially true May-August). There are also times when Castle grounds may not be available due to a Historical Society sponsored event or a rental.  All events are listed on our Calendar of Events page.  Please consult this when making your plans.

Interior Photographs / Inside Lambert Castle Museum

A permit is required to take commerical photographs inside Lambert Castle Museum.  Permits are not issued during times when the Museum is open to the general public.  During the one hour period, the group will have exclusive use of the interior of the Castle and a Museum staff member will be present. The permit fee is $250.00, payable at the time of applying for the permit.  Applications may be made by writing a letter of request that specifies the date, time, number in party and daytime telephone number, or by telephone (973) 247-0085 ext. 201 or by email to the Museum at  info@lambertcastle.org.  Payment may be made once the reservation is confirmed by the staff.  Only checks or money orders payable to the Passaic County Historical Society or P.C.H.S. are accepted by mail.  Cash and credit card payments may be made at the Museum by prior arrangement. Once a permit is issued, the permit fee becomes non-refundable.

Permits are issued for times when Lambert Castle is not open to the public.  In other words, permits may not be issued Wednesday through Sunday from 1-4 PM, the Castle’s regular public visiting times.  Permits may be issued Monday and Tuesday when the Castle is closed to the public, and before 1 PM and after 4 PM on Wednesday through Sunday.  Please note: from Memorial Day to Labor Day the Museum extends its public visiting times earlier by one hour, opening at 12 Noon rather than the usual 1 PM.  Thus, during the summer, on weekends, permits may be issued before 12 Noon and after 4 PM.  Permits are not issued on the following holidays: New Year’s Eve/Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve/Day.

In the case of wedding photographs, the party admitted is limited to the members of the bridal party.  Wedding guests and family members who are not part of the bridal party will not be admitted.  No dressing room facilities are available inside the Castle, and the exhibitions will not be available for viewing during the photograph session.  Bridal parties are required to stay together as a group during the time they are in the Museum.

The areas inside Lambert Castle that have been designated for commerical photographs are all public areas including main entrance hall, grand staircase, skylite atrium; and second-floor gallery (balcony area surrounding the atrium).  Photographs are not allowed beyond the ropes in any period rooms.

Permit holders are asked to observe the following rules while inside Lambert Castle:
No food or drink
No smoking
No sitting on furniture
No crossing boundaries, such as ropes and stanchions
No entry into staff areas
No pets

Permit holders are liable for any losses or damages that may occur to Lambert Castle Museum or its contents during the photograph session. If you are issued a permit for inside use and also want to take photos outside, you must also apply for a grounds permit with Passaic County.

PLEASE NOTE: Each year, Lambert Castle Museum sets up and conducts its largest annual fund-raising event, The Lambert Castle Holiday Boutique, from October through mid-December.  As a result, no appointments may be scheduled for commercial photography inside or outside the Museum during this time.  Since these dates change from year to year, please call (973) 247-0085 for the exact “black-out” dates.

The Passaic County Historical Society is a private, membership-supported, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) educational institution that owns and maintains an extraordinary collection of historical artifacts, archival materials, and genealogical records.
